Three coastlines in one city

La Concha is the city’s signature: a crescent of pale sand protected by the bay, backed by a graceful promenade and Mount Igueldo. Ondarreta, at its western end, is quieter and family-friendly. Zurriola faces the open sea and attracts surfers, younger crowds and a more energetic atmosphere. You can walk between all three, making San Sebastián unusually easy for a beach break without a car.

Swimming conditions vary with the Atlantic tide. Check local signs and lifeguard advice, especially at Zurriola. In summer, beach tents and chairs are available for hire, while the promenade and harbour provide easy alternatives when the sand is crowded. Mount Urgull rises behind the Old Town and gives a short, rewarding viewpoint walk; wear shoes with grip after rain.

How to eat well

Pintxos are small, carefully made bites traditionally eaten standing at the bar. A classic evening involves one or two dishes in several places, with a drink at each stop. Set a budget before starting: individual plates may cost €2.50–€6, and a lively route can become expensive quickly. Look for seasonal seafood, Gilda skewers, tortilla, mushrooms and Basque cheesecake. For a longer meal, reserve ahead at a restaurant outside the busiest Old Town lanes.

San Sebastián has an exceptional concentration of acclaimed restaurants, but you do not need a tasting menu to eat memorably. Local markets, cider houses beyond the centre and neighbourhood bars offer better value. The city’s food culture is part of the attraction, not an activity to schedule after sightseeing.

Day trips and costs

Public buses and trains connect nearby coastal towns. Take a half-day to Getaria for harbour seafood and the Balenciaga museum, or visit Hondarribia for colourful houses and a historic quarter. Bilbao is reachable by bus in around 75 minutes for a longer excursion. A mid-range couple should expect €140–€240 per day excluding accommodation, depending mainly on dining choices. Rooms commonly range from €100 to €250.

When to go

Summer is lively but accommodation is scarce around festivals. September often offers warm water, manageable crowds and a full cultural calendar. Rain is possible year-round, so pack a light waterproof layer. San Sebastián’s advantage is resilience: on a wet day, replace the beach with markets, galleries, cider and another walk. It is less about remote wilderness than about making the coast part of daily city life.
